About a week ago, I mailed off my last bunch postcards for SNCB PAC and Stamp NC Blue. For these last 16, you might notice I "cheated" a bit and printed labels bearing the message I'd asked others to handwrite. (Sorry, not sorry).
Shortly after that, I did the math. With YOUR help, we reached out to 16,683 registered voters in North Carolina via 34,978 postcards. I know this, in part, because of the postcards that came back "return to sender." Most of these were folks who no longer lived at the addresses we had. I was the one checking that mailbox and at first, I felt like every returned postcard was a failure. And then I realized that for every returned postcard, that meant that dozens upon dozens were being delivered successfully. And suddenly, every returned postcard felt like a small victory and the pile of accumulated returned postcards felt like a huge win.
Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday's election, what we did, what YOU made possible, matters. I know this because the voter turnout among the folks we contacted before the May 2018 primary was more than double the turnout of those same folks for the May 2014 primary. I know this because of the early voter turnout in NC for Tuesday's election is up 73% over 2014's early voting turnout. I know this because efforts like ours are making national news - two articles in the Washington Post and New York Times, just within the last week. And, more than anything else, I know this just because I do.
As the results roll in late Tuesday night, no matter what, I'm going to hold tight to what we've accomplished. Thank you for every postcard you wrote; every penny you contributed; every door you knocked; phone call you made; every text you sent; every conversation you had; and every Facebook post, Tweet, and Instagram post you liked and/or shared. Thank you.
Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday's election, what YOU did matters.
P.S.: If you, like me, are already thinking, "what's next for 2020?" don't worry - news of what's next for Stamp NC Blue and SNCB PAC will be forthcoming in the new year (2019). And since we're all in dire need of a bit of comic relief, I hope you'll enjoy this Saturday Night Live skit about the Blue Wave as much as I have! 🌊🌊🌊
