We are starting a series of week-long looks at key issues that matter to many voters in the 2018 elections. This week, we'll focus on some of the major environmental issues that North Carolina faces. Find out more about these topics by reading the links below and be sure to ask candidates in your district about how they intend to address the issues that matter most to YOU.

First up, groundwater contamination: the results of federally mandated tests prove that multiple toxic contaminants are leaking into groundwater near Duke Energy coal ash ponds. "Without a statewide, routine monitoring network of private drinking water wells, it is impossible to know the full extent and nature of the contamination," writes Lisa Sorg in this NC Policy Watch in-depth story. What you can do:

  • Ask your national and state 2018 legislative candidates how they propose to address this problem and let them know if it's important to you.
  • Consider signing this NC Conservation Network petition asking your NCGA senator to support the House version of H189, which would provide additional funding to state agencies that monitor and manage chemical contamination: petition. This bill is a first step, not a solution, according to environmental experts.
  • Contact your current NC state senator to express your concern about this issue and your support for a robust version of H189. Find your NC state senator here.
